 1. Updated Offer Letter Manual for Unclassified Staff Posted on HR Website

The Department of Human Resources is pleased to announce that a comprehensive update of the Guide to Unclassified Offer Letters is now available on our website.

Staff can access the complete manual at www.hr.uconn.edu/employment_services/offer_manual.html. The updated manual should be used to compose all draft offer letters for administrative, managerial, faculty, academic department heads, non-teaching unclassified professionals, postdoctoral fellows, graduate assistants, adjunct faculty, summer and intersession faculty appointments and all other special payroll hires and appointment renewals. We also request that you remove your old bookmarks and favorites and replace them with the new web address.

If you have paper copies of sample offer letters or templates on your personal computer, please do not use them in the future. We suggest that you review the information in the section How to Use the Offer Letter Manual for insight into the rationale behind this handbook and assistance in using it effectively.

If you have any questions, your department's Human Resources Associate will be happy to assist you. Contact names are listed at http://www.hr.uconn.edu/about/hrstaff.html.

2. Reminder of Updated Offer Letters for New Adjunct Faculty Re: Retirement Plans

We recently learned that some departments are using an outdated offer letter for new Adjunct Faculty. Please use the revised offer letter templates for new hires from outside the University. The templates have crucial information on mandatory retirement enrollment, per a directive from the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC). The change involves an automatic default enrollment in the Alternate Retirement Plan (ARP) after 90 days from the start of employment. To avoid this automatic enrollment, the Adjunct must provide a written waiver of the ARP or be enrolled currently in the State Employees' Retirement System (SERS) or Teachers' Retirement Plan through other employment with a Connecticut educational institution.

The updated letters are available at http://www.hr.uconn.edu/employment_services/offer_manual.html#7.

Complete information for this benefit is at www.hr.uconn.edu/benefits/sppage.html under "Alternate Retirement Plan". If you have questions, please contact benefits@uconn.edu or speak with an Employee Benefits staff member at 860-486-0400.

3. Federal Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) Required Posting

The Department of Labor has finalized changes to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which are effective January 16, 2009. Every employer covered by the FMLA is required to post and keep posted on its premises, in conspicuous places where employees are employed, a notice explaining the Act's provisions.

Please post the revised poster found at Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) poster in your department. Additional FMLA information can be found on the Human Resources website at http://www.hr.uconn.edu/benefits/fmla.html.
