3. Something's Happening Kick-off Event

On April 17, over 100 AFSCME and CEUI staff attended a morning session on the topic of a civil work environment. President Hogan defined a civil environment in his letter of support for the session as "an inclusive community that celebrates diversity and promotes civility". The event was sponsored by: CEUI; AFSCME; the Women's Center; the Department of Human Resources; the Office of Diversity & Equity; and the Office of Audit, Compliance, and Ethics.

The focus of the session was to educate staff about the vision of a work environment that is free of harassment, sexual harassment, bullying, discrimination, and violence. Opening remarks were provided by Donna Munroe, Associate Vice President of Human Resources & Payroll Services and Dana McGee, Director of the Office of Diversity and Equity. The remainder of the session was facilitated by Kathleen Holgerson, Director of the Women's Center, Leslie Maddocks, Secretary/Treasurer & Chief Steward CEUI, and Carol Millette, Vice-President & Chief Steward of AFSCME. Policies were reviewed, supporting resources provided, and thought provoking questions were posed by the facilitators and participants. Additional presentations were made by Rebecca Myshrall, Labor Relations Associate in Human Resources and Kimberly Fearney, Assistant Compliance Officer from the Office of Audit, Compliance and Ethics. The session ended with a presentation on dealing with conflict and assertiveness by Pamela Schipani, Director of Housing Services.

This event is the kick-off for more events to come on topics of workplace violence and sexual harassment. An upcoming session will be the held at the 2008 UConn Women's Advance Conference on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the UConn School of Business, Graduate Business Learning Center, 100 Constitution Plaza, Hartford, CT. 4. Midterm Reviews for New Staff

The performance evaluation is an effective management tool available to supervisors whenever they determine that it would be helpful. It is a formal way to provide feedback related to an employee’s work performance and is a good opportunity for supervisors to set performance standards, communicate their expectations, and assist in setting work-related goals. Both classified and unclassified staff members are evaluated annually. However, Labor Relations would like to remind supervisors of additional times when an evaluation is either required by collective bargaining agreement, or strongly recommended.

Classified Staff:
Each employee in classified service who is appointed to a permanent position serves an initial 6-month working test period. A performance evaluation is required at least two weeks prior to the end of the working test period. We also recommend that supervisors give a midterm review halfway through the working test period, or approximately three months after the employee is hired. This practice gives the supervisor an additional opportunity to provide the new employee with feedback well in advance to the end of the working test period, specifying strengths as well as areas that may need improvement.

Professional Employees:
Two probationary evaluations are required for UCPEA members during their 12-month probationary period. Approximately halfway through and at the end of the probationary period, each employee shall be given a written evaluation of his/her performance. The two probationary evaluations provide important opportunities during the probationary period to clarify job expectations and discuss work performance, and help to set a standard for productive communication between the supervisor and the new employee. It is also recommended that a 6-month review is given to new employees in end-date positions.

5. Flextime Reminder for NP-3 Members

Twice a year, for the academic year and the summer, AFSCME members may request a flexible work schedule (Art. 17, sec. 6). The flextime period for this summer is 5/12/2008 - 8/22/2008. Flextime requests are subject to the approval of the employee's supervisor and unit/agency operating needs. The Flextime Schedule Selection Form (NP-3) must be submitted by the employee at the time the request is made. The employee must choose one of the 15 schedules listed and sign the form. If the schedule is approved, the form must be signed by both the supervisor and the Dean/Director/Department Head. The original is kept in the employee's personnel file, and a copy is sent to Human Resources, Unit 5075.

6. Carpool Tool

The Department of Human Resources currently maintains a web-based carpool tool for faculty and staff. The carpool tool is designed to allow faculty and staff to self-register and search for potential carpool partners in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island.

Using your university NetID, employees can access the carpool tool at https://secure.uconn.edu/hr/carpool. Registration is completed by simply listing your name, work phone and/or email and the town, county, and state from which you commute. Once registered, you may then search for carpool partners by town, county, or state and may contact those, who by registering, have indicated an interest in carpooling. As a self- service tool, you may join or remove your name at any time should you no longer wish to participate in the pool. Participation is completely voluntary.

If you do not know your NetID and/or NetID password, please visit http://netid.uconn.edu
