PROGRAM DIRECTOR
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of designated administrator or executive program
director, provides administrative and program management for a training,
research or educational program, or sub-unit of a major program, designed
to support the University's research activities, educational outreach services,
the academic curriculum, or to provide a student service.
GUIDELINES FOR USING THE POSITION
Incumbents in this position are expected to be responsible for the day-to-day
administration and the delivery of program content for a program of moderate
size and complexity, and are expected to act independently within the goals
and objectives of the program and the guidelines established by the supervisor.
The primary difference between the Executive Program Director and the
Program Director is the size and complexity of the program and the level
of responsibility for program leadership. Both can act fairly autonomously,
but a Program Director often is responsible for a sub-unit of a larger
program and is often the third person in the chain-of-command, after the
senior administrative official/principal investigator and an Executive
Program Director.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plans and implements program services and activities, in assigned program
area, and supervise the day-to-day delivery of program content.

Directs the day-to-day operation and administration of the program, or
sub-unit of a major program, in accordance with program goals and objective;
oversees program coordination and logistics; prepares necessary reports;
resolves problems and makes changes to accommodate changing priorities
and needs.

Selects, trains, supervises and evaluates professional, classified and
student staff; recommends staffing needs; determines work assignments and
work schedules to most effectively meet program needs.

Performs office management duties for the program or sub-unit of a larger
program; directs the work flow and supervises the necessary administrative
paperwork, records, complex filing system to support program, including
fiscal, personnel and student records.

Makes budget recommendations and manages approved budget for program or
sub-unit of major program; approves expenditures, within broad guidelines,
and prepares budget reports and projections; if required by the program
and if delegated by the supervisor, may generate income, set fees and oversee
billing and accounting procedures.

Plans, organizes and administers workshops, training programs, courses
and program curricula, in accordance with program goals.

Serves as a resource to students, staff and others on matters relating
to program policies, procedures and activities.

Engages in public relations and promotional activities for the program;
plans and implements recruiting and promotional strategies, in area of
responsibility

Collects and analyzes program data and participates in evaluating program
effectiveness; identifies problems and makes changes, within prescribed
guidelines, or recommends major changes.

Assists in developing policies and procedures.

May participate in securing funding for the program.

If applicable, recruits qualified students or participants to the program
through promotional activities and contact with target population; assesses
educational need of target population and recommends courses of action
to meet those needs.

If applicable, screens applicants for admission to program and assists
in making admissions decisions; is responsible for registration, course
schedules and academic records; provides academic, career and personal
counseling to applicants and students; monitors student progress and makes
decisions regarding academic probation, dismissal and exceptions to prescribed
program.

If applicable, keeps informed of and monitors compliance with state licensing,
professional certification or accreditation requirements.

If applicable, oversees training and research activities that may be conducted
in the program.

Is responsible for special projects/operations which may be on-going or
short-term and which require planning, coordination, supervision and thorough
knowledge of the program.

Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
-
Bachelors degree in discipline appropriate to the program to be served
and four to five years relevant experience; or Masters degree and two to
four years of relevant experience.

Demonstrated knowledge of the program specialty and ability to identify
and resolve day-to-day program problems.

Good administrative and organizational skills, including ability to identify
and resolve administrative problems.

Ability to plan and organize workshops/training courses/curricula appropriate
to the program.

If applicable to the program, ability to successfully recruit and counsel
students and to interpret educational records/program data and related
information.

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with faculty,
staff, students, administrators as well as external agencies/groups and
the public.
