DIRECTOR OF COMPUTING SERVICES/REGIONAL CAMPUS
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of designated administrator, applies independent
judgement as well as expertise in planning, organizing and managing the
effective operation of a large regional campus computer facility to service
all graduate and undergraduate programs.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides administrative and technical leadership in designing, developing
and Implementing computing services projects for a large regional campus,
including local area network and wide area networks.

Determines requirements of program users and other users of stand alone
workstations and local area networks, assisting in the determination of
priorities and timelines; serves as a resource to administrators, faculty,
staff and students in resolving technical problems and needs.

Serves on university wide computer committees and directs the computer
committee on the regional campus. Whenever necessary, assists administration
in long term planning of computer activities on other regional campuses.

Directs all related campus computing services activities. Works with
program and department heads, including the regional campuses library director
for optimal automation planning.

Develops and implements policies regarding the use of computer resources.
Oversees the management of all software and hardware facilities for the
regional campus computing services.

As appropriate, designs and documents software programs to meet specialized
needs of department/division; confers with supervisor or departmental staff
to determine program intent, performance, output requirements and data
collection; designs data base, if needed; tests adequacy of software program
to ensure desired result.

Maintains a current inventory of hardware, software, documentation supplies
and other equipment needed for the operation of the campus computer facility;
is responsible for maintaining system security, including backups of all
software.

Trains users (including faculty and staff) on technical computer related
material in areas of operating systems, networking operating systems, and
other related mainframe and microcomputer software packages.

Prepares budget requests for campus computing services and assists in budget
presentation for regional campus computing projects.

Provides reports on campus computing services operations and computer resources,
as necessary.

Hires, trains and supervises several part-time employees and a large student
staff supporting the curricular and research needs of undergraduate program
and professional programs such as the MBA and School of Social Work, on
a large regional campus.

Evaluates need for and recommends acquisition of additional hardware and
software.

Keeps abreast of the changes in the computer and related technology for
optimal long term planning.

May maintain a library of computer documentation, manuals and related information.

Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
-
Bachelor's degree in computer science or closely related field or equivalent
training and experience. Advance degree preferred.

At least ten years related experience in higher education or computing.

Ability to develop computer curriculum and teach technical material.

A thorough understanding of several programming languages; e.g. FORTRAN,
BASIC, PASCAL, ASSEMBLY

Strong supervisory skills

A thorough understanding of systems analysis and design and local area
networks (LANS).

Ability to interface with technical personnel at the University Computer
Center. Ability to interact with administration at the main campus.

Good written and oral communication skills and analytical ability
