The University of Connecticut, Department of Allied Health Sciences, invites applications for the position of Lecturer and Director of the Dietetics Program.  The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of faculty from dietetics, health promotion, genetics, laboratory sciences, and psychology who are dedicated to developing leaders in allied health.  This is an 11-month, non-tenure track appointment that is annually renewable based on performance. 

The candidate of choice will direct the Coordinated Program in Dietetics and Dietetic Internship.  Responsibilities include student recruitment and retention; managing the Dietetics curriculum; teaching and advising; maintaining program accreditation through high-quality curriculum and practice experiences; supervising clinical faculty members; and participating in scholarly, professional, and outreach activities commensurate with the mission of a land-grant college.

The Center for Continuing Studies and the Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for an Assistant /Associate Extension Faculty to participate in an Academic Partnership between the Department of Allied Health Sciences (AHS) and the Occupational Safety and Health program (OSH) in the Center for Continuing Studies (CCS).  This is an eleven month, non-tenure track renewable appointment beginning Fall 2008.

The successful applicant will assist in the development, coordination, and teaching of OSH and AHS courses both online and face to face.  Additional responsibilities include participation in scholarly research, student advising and outreach activities consistent with the mission of the University and college, and program review/planning.  The purpose of this partnership is to provide traditional as well as returning adult students with knowledge about identifying and prioritizing environmental, occupational safety and health hazards and problems; evaluating risks posed by hazards/problems through analytical and/or empirical methods; developing prevention and control strategies to eliminate or minimize the hazards/problems and applying and validating the interventions developed.

Minimum Qualifications:  A Master’s degree in a field of Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health.  Three years teaching in an accredited institution of higher education with excellent teaching reviews.  Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:  Ph.D. in Environmental/Occupational Safety and Health or related discipline.  Five years working as a professional in a field in Environment/Occupational Safety and Health.  Knowledge and experience in teaching online and/or didactic courses in Occupational Health and safety.

Assistant Extension Professor

The Department of Animal Science at the University of Connecticut is soliciting applications for the position of Assistant Extension Professor in Dairy Products Manufacturing.  This is a full time, 11-month, non-tenure track position subject to annual renewals.  The applicant must have a Ph.D. degree in dairy products manufacturing, food science with an emphasis on dairy products technology, or similar program.  This position is responsible for the extension and teaching activities and operations of the UConn Department of Animal Science Creamery (manufacturing) and Dairy Bar (sales) Teaching and Research Laboratory.  Hands-on experience working in a dairy processing facility, particularly in the formulation and processing of ice cream, cheese and yogurt, is preferred.  Teaching or extension education experience is preferred.  The applicant must be qualified to obtain a State of Connecticut milk pasteurizer’s license.  In addition to conducting extension programs, teaching undergraduate dairy manufacturing classes and operation of the dairy manufacturing and sales, the candidate will also be expected to cooperate with other department faculty members in undergraduate and graduate education, advising, and recruitment programs and perform outreach activities supporting the mission of the department and college.  Salary is commensurate with background and experience.

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Connecticut seeks to hire a dynamic and energetic individual as Department Head to supervise and coordinate research, teaching and extension activities of the Department. The position is a 10-month, tenured appointment, and applicants must meet University requirements for appointment at the rank of Professor.  While the position is primarily administrative, the successful candidate is also encouraged to conduct research, teaching and/or extension work in an area that will enhance existing programs.  As the departmental administrative officer, the Head reports directly to the Dean.  Duties include: leadership and coordination of undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and cooperative extension education and outreach; administrative responsibilities for academic affairs, departmental personnel, budget matters and physical facilities; leadership and coordination of relationships with relevant local and state agencies, alumni and the citizens of Connecticut; leadership in development of departmental programs, capital improvements and external funding opportunities; developing programs to recruit graduate and undergraduate students, particularly those who are traditionally underrepresented.

Minimum Qualifications:  A Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Economics, Environmental Economics, Resource Economics or a closely related field; a record of outstanding and nationally recognized scholarship, achievements and professional activities related to teaching, research and extension that will qualify the individual to be tenured at the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics; the interpersonal skills suited to direct an academic department engaged in teaching, research and extension activities at a major land-grant university.

Preferred Qualifications:  A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the land-grant mission and philosophy; a demonstrated success in attracting external funding; prior administrative experience in a leadership role.

About the Department:  The Department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with concentration in two sub-disciplines: Food Marketing/Industrial Organization and Environmental and Resource Economics.  In addition, supporting coursework is provided to the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture.  Worldwide, the Department is ranked 19th in Environmental and Resource Economics and 23rd in Agricultural and Resource Economics. The successful candidate should have research interests in theoretical and numerical modeling of geomaterials and geostructures as well as the ability to design, execute and analyze laboratory experiments and field tests. The Chair will be a member of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the Environmental Engineering Program.  He/she will also hold a research position within the Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering and is expected to take advantage of its excellent analytical facilities.  The Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering occupies spacious and state-of-the-art facilities for conducting environmental research and educating graduate students.  Consistent with a mission to advance multidisciplinary and collaborative environmental research, the Center comprises over 80 research faculty members in most of the Colleges and Schools at the University.  In addition, it houses EPA-certified laboratories for analysis of metals and nutrients, has considerable field sampling capabilities, and provides pre- and post-award services for its faculty.

CT Global Fuel Cell Center

The Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center (CGFCC), in the School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut, invites applications and/or nominations for the position of Director.  The Director will be responsible for operations of the Center and will report to the Dean, School of Engineering.  It is anticipated that the Director will possess: (i) the leadership qualities necessary to attract significant resources and engender strong collaborative partnerships between the CGFCC and industrial and government partners; (ii) significant experience and interest in marketing and promotion as well as successful funds generation; and (iii) the skills necessary to facilitate team-based visionary research and development in the area of fuel cell technology and application.

The CGFCC, established in 2001 with significant investment from Connecticut Innovations, Inc. and Connecticut industry, is housed in a state-of-the-art 16,000 sq. ft. facility located at the Storrs campus.  The mission of the Center is to become the world’s premier academic resource for advanced research, development and technology transfer in fuel cell technologies.  In addition, the School of Engineering is working with the University, the State and industrial partners to attract an eminent faculty member and associated team in the area of alternative energy and alternative fuels/fuel cells.

It is anticipated that endowment funds will be available allowing the Director to have discretionary authority to expend the proceeds to advance his/her research, educational, and outreach activities in the field.  Salary and benefits of the Director will be provided by the School of Engineering and will be commensurate with experience.

Areas of technical expertise include, but are not limited to: Fuel Processing, Catalysis, Electrocatalysis, Electrochemistry/Electro-chemical Engineering, Fuel Cell Power Plant Systems Analysis, Transport Phenomena, Heat and Mass Exchange, Materials and Polymers, Systems Design Modeling and Manufacturing, and Fuel Cell Applications.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in engineering or a related physical science discipline, as well as a distinguished record of research in fuel cell technology.  Academic appointment will be at the rank of full professor aligned with one of the School’s five departments (Chemical, Materials & Biomolecular; Civil & Environmental; Computer Science & Engineering; Electrical & Computer; or Mechanical Engineering).  It is anticipated that candidates will be Fellows in a relevant professional society and have an established national/international reputation in their research areas.

The School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut includes 1,700 undergraduate and 475 graduate students.  Among the 110 faculty members are two members of the National Academy of Engineering, one member of the National Academy of Sciences, 18 chief editors and 50 associate editors and editorial board members of prestigious technical journals, as well as 45 Fellows of professional societies.  During the academic year 2005-06, the engineering faculty published 343 peer-reviewed journal articles and 415 conference proceedings papers, and generated $18 million in external research expenditure.  The School has eight Endowed Chairs or Named Professorships throughout the five departments, with funding available for additional positions.
