Postdoctoral Fellow I

The Center for Behavioral Education and Research (CBER; www.cber.org) in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut seeks qualified candidates for a two-year, postdoctoral training program which will be funded by the US Department of Education, Institute for Education Sciences (IES).  The postdoctoral program provides opportunities for Fellows to participate in a program of study linked directly to on-going research activities, supported by individualized learning opportunities including advanced statistical and methodological training, and culminating in individualized programs of applied academic and/or social behavior research. Postdoctoral fellows will collaborate with CBER research scientists on projects related to the (a) development of teaching materials and curricula, (b) intervention research, and/or (c) assessment research.  Fellows will access CBER opportunities that include, for example, (a) building advanced statistical and methodological skills through an individually designed plan of professional development activities, (b) participation in large scale grant-supported research activities, (c) application of advanced statistical and methodological skills to complex educational questions, and (d) direct participation in dissemination activities that translate research into applied formats and outcomes.  Candidates must be able to undertake intensive statistical and methodological training while simultaneously engaging in quality applied research projects with several CBER Research Scientists and graduate assistants.

Minimum Qualifications:  Qualified applicants must have a completed Ph.D. in school psychology, special education, educational psychology or related field by August of 2008. 

Preferred Qualifications:  Preference will be given to candidates with previous documented experience and interest in conducting research related to CBER projects in early literacy, adolescent literacy, assessment, treatment integrity and/or positive behavior supports.

This is a one year, end date position which may be renewed for a second year pending funding and performance.

Postdoctoral Fellow I
C and N cycling in marine ciliates

The University of Connecticut’s Department of Marine Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in biological oceanography, focusing on C and N cycling in marine ciliates.  The postdoctoral advisor is George McManus, Professor of Marine Sciences, and the position is located on the UConn – Avery Point Campus.  Funding is through the National Science Foundation.

Minimum Qualifications:  a completed Ph.D. in marine science or related field. Experience with tracer techniques and/or molecular genetic methods is preferred. 

This is a one year, grant-funded position subject to annual renewal.

Temporary University Specialist

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Connecticut is seeking to hire several admissions representatives to support the University-wide effort to make the Class of 2013 the most academically competitive, socially diverse and talented class to date.

Overview:  Admissions Representatives will represent the University of Connecticut and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at college fairs, high school visits, and related programs throughout the country.  Extensive travel is required.  Admissions representatives will present to prospective applicants, their parents, and secondary school counselors the educational benefits of attending UConn, the nature of the student experience, and requirements for admission. 

Requirements:  A bachelor’s degree is required, as well as a valid driver’s license, credit card (not a debit card) and the ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.  Preference will be given to recent University of Connecticut graduates who have demonstrated academic excellence and active in research and/or campus activities.  Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to work with minimal supervision. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is committed to hiring a diverse work force.

Training for this position will be conducted from mid-August until mid-September.   Travel and recruiting extends from mid-September until mid-December.  Work during selected evenings and weekends are required and as assigned by the Director of Admissions.

This is a temporary, special payroll position.  Salary is competitive and will be discussed during the interview for selected candidates.  Health benefits are not included.   The University covers expenses related only to recruitment and travel.

These positions may be extended through April of 2009 for additional recruitment activities and admissions functions.  Determination of an extension will be based upon a review of performance and is not guaranteed.

The University of Connecticut’s Waterbury campus is seeking a part-time, temporary Instructional Specialist Laboratory Assistant for the fall 2008 semester.  This part-time, temporary position reports directly to the Waterbury campus Biology faculty and the duties include preparation of culture media, mixing of solutions and preparation of materials for a variety of labs, transfer of microbial cultures, autoclave sterilization of waste, maintenance of living collections, up-keep and cleaning of current resources, lab set-up and clean-up for lab sections in Biology and Microbiology, general maintenance of the lab and assistance to faculty with some instructional support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in science with a strong background in Biology and/or Microbiology and one to three years experience OR equivalent education and experience; demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles.

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience in a teaching laboratory; ability to use specialized electronic and mechanical equipment, computers and computer programs; excellent organizational skills including initiative and attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills including ability to work in a team setting and maintain good working relationships with a variety of people including students, staff, and professors.

The position begins August 18, 2008 and ends December 12, 2008.  The position averages 15-22 hours per week.

The University of Connecticut’s Avery Point Campus in Groton, CT is soliciting applications for a part-time temporary position in Marine Aquaculture Outreach for the Connecticut Sea Grant College Program beginning May 1, 2008 extending through January 31, 2009.  This is a fifteen hours per week position spread over a minimum of three days per week.

Duties may include but are not limited to: Maintain the functions of the aquaculture extension office under the direction of the extension educator for aquaculture;  provide organizational support for ongoing outreach programs in marine aquaculture; respond to stakeholder requests for program services and advice, information, and educational materials; research  and provide information; maintain and update the Online Resource Guide for Aquaculture web site; participate in relevant committee meetings as well as in professional associations and trade shows; compile data and prepare reports for the office and Sea Grant Program; prepare, review and data entry information for historical shellfisheries databases; draft brief articles for newsletters, and complete any other special projects or work assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:  Graduation from an accredited undergraduate institution and one year experience or equivalent training and experience in aquaculture outreach, research and/or education.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Word and Excel software programs and working knowledge of Macromedia Dreamweaver software is preferable, but not mandatory.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Benefits are not included.

The University of Connecticut’s Department of Marine Sciences is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in molecular systematics of marine zooplankton including molecular species identification, phylogeography, and phylogeny.  The postdoctoral advisor is Ann Bucklin, Professor of Marine Sciences, and the position is located on the UConn – Avery Point Campus.  Funding is through the Census of Marine Zooplankton (see http://www.CMarZ.org), a field project of the Census of Marine Life (CoML).

Minimum Qualifications:  a completed Ph.D. in marine sciences or related field and expertise with standard molecular genetic procedures including DNA and RNA purification, PCR, primer design, cloning, DNA sequencing and data analysis.

This is a one year grant-funded position subject to annual renewal.
