Maternity Leave Available to UCPEA Professionals

Sick Leave:

An employee giving birth to a child is entitled to 30 workdays of sick leave beginning with the birth of the child.  Any sick leave entitlement from the current year, "as if accrued" sick leave and "banked" sick leave on the books will be utilized as part of the 30 days (Article 12).

Five sick leave days for the birth, adoption or taking custody of a child and for prenatal or postnatal care of a spouse or significant other, may be used.  These days are deducted from the 10 sick days which are available for illness of one's child (Article 12).

Other Accrued Leave Time:

Up to 30 days of one's own accrued time, other than sick leave (i.e., vacation, compensatory, holiday, personal), may be used at the time of birth or adoption of a child (Article 12).  For the mother, this time is used at the expiration of the maternity disability time.

Unpaid Leave:

Upon expiration of paid leave following the birth/adoption of a child, the employee is entitled to up to twenty four (24) weeks of unpaid leave, with position held, under the Connecticut General Statutes 5-248a, FMLA (Article 12.3).  Requests for unpaid leave of absence must be submitted in writing and signed by the supervisor and dean or director.

Half-Time Leave:

If the employee does not take the unpaid State FMLA leave available to either parent, he or she is entitled to return to work 1/2 time for up to 6 months.  An additional 6 months at 1/2 time may be requested, but is descretionary on management's part.  The half-time leave entitlement is counted for the 31st day after the birth of the child, i.e., when the maternity leave ends (Article 12).
