The EAP is a confidential assessment, brief counseling and referral service available to all employees. It is designed to assist in the identification and resolution of any personal problem that may be affecting an employee’s job performance. If you are a supervisor of an employee with performance issues that you believe may be the result of personal problems, encourage your employee to utilize the EAP. All EAP services are confidential and provided at no cost to the employee.

Services available under the UConn EAP program are one personal session per employee per year that includes assessment, brief counseling and referral service. An appointment with an EAP counselor will be provided within 48 hours at a location convenient to the employee’s work location.

If a referral is necessary, the EAP counselor will assist the employee in planning and obtaining resources through the community or through the employee’s medical insurance.

FAQ'S

  1. What kind of records are kept about my participation? The EAP program may keep a confidential record of the presenting problem and referral source. Nothing goes into a personnel file. If it is necessary to follow-up on treatment participation, a signed release from the employee is necessary before the provider gives any information.

  2. What will my supervisor know about my problems? Only what you want them to know. The confidentiality of this program is essential and EAP counselors work exceptionally hard to maintain it.

  3. Do I have to accept referral to the EAP? Participation is always voluntary and as in any treatment program, you are not obligated to accept any particular therapist or provider. Generally a counselor offers a choice of 2 or 3 resources and you can select between them.

  4. If I'm in trouble about my attendance or work performance, will going to EAP get me out of it? An EAP referral is designed to help employees address the presenting problem. It is not automatic excusal from either actual or pending discipline.

  5. Who can make a referral to EAP? Referrals may be made by supervisors, co-workers, union stewards or by the affected employee as a self-referral.
