Sabbatical Leaves Policy

RE: Sabbatical Leaves

A sabbatical leave presents a significant opportunity for faculty renewal. As we make decisions about requests for next year, I ask that you ensure that our expectations be conveyed in writing to all those granted sabbatical leaves, and I have attached a sample letter for your convenience. Let me highlight the significant elements of this program as established in the By-Laws (Article XV, Section K). Please read this in conjunction with the letter from Fred Maryanski on the same subject dated 18 October 1997.

  1. The privilege is available to all full-time tenured faculty who have been in continuous full-time service for at least six years. In order to accommodate special situations, the continuous service requirement is interpreted as full-time service for at least 12 of the last 14 semesters.

  2. Sabbatical leaves may be for either one semester at full pay, or two semesters at half pay.

  3. Faculty on fully compensated sabbatical leaves are not permitted to engage in paid employment elsewhere. Those on half-pay may not exceed their full time salary equivalency. This does not preclude consulting activities performed in accordance with the University's consulting policy.

  4. Arrangements for carrying on the duties of a person on leave shall be made by the appropriate department head and dean. The department head is expected to certify whether or not the work of the department can be carried on substantially as it would have been had the Leave not been granted. It is not expected that sabbatical leaves will be granted if they must be taken at the expense of the students or the regular departmental program.

  5. Per long-standing practice and according to the University By-Laws, faculty members are obligated to return to active service at the University for a minimum of one year following a sabbatical leave of any duration, This obligation will not be waived by the Chancellor except for the most compelling reasons.

  6. After a leave has been taken, a written report of the work done shall be made to the department head with copies to the Dean and Chancellor,

The full text of the regulations are available in the University Laws and By-Laws, in Article XV as noted above. Procedural questions may be addressed to Jeanne Germaine in Human Resources at jeanne.germain@uconn.edu or (860) 486-2432.

Sabbatical Leave Approval Letter

Dear Professor Jones:

I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Trustees has approved your request for sabbatical leave for the fall 1999 academic semester. Because of the one semester duration, the leave will be at full pay. (Personalize as appropriate)

Please let me briefly review the University's expectations for sabbatical leave as reflected in the By-Laws. In that this privilege is offered for the purpose of the advancement of knowledge and professional improvement, I will expect a written report of the work accomplished. Please make this available to me within the first two months of the spring 2000 semester and provide copies to the Department Head and the Chancellor. You are obligated to return to active service at the University for a minimum of one year following your leave. Additionally you are not permitted to engage in paid employment while on sabbatical leave. Should any of these conditions not be met, we will have to pursue appropriate corrective action. If you have any questions, please discuss them with me as soon as possible so that any potential problems can be resolved.

Please accept my very best wishes for a productive experience. I look forward to your return and anticipate that you will be both renewed and refreshed!
