New Benefits for Special Payroll Lecturers

TO: Deans, Directors and Department Heads
FROM: Virginia Miller, Assistant Vice Chancellor

  1. The new collective bargaining agreement with the AAUP states:
"Effective August 1997, for those Lecturers who elect group health insurance under the statutory self-pay provision, and who are contracted to teach at least one course each semester of the academic year, there will be an option to be paid over 26 pay periods.

This will provide continuous health insurance over the full year rather than the on-again, off-again situation that previously provided health insurance coverage between November and January and then between March and June.  Spreading the pay over 12 months is the vehicle that makes the continous coverage possible.  The rates for this insurance, which are paid by the employee, are on the reverse.  This information will be sent directly to all eligible employees in August, so this copy is essential for your informational purposes.

  2.  ADJUNCT PAY RATES were also adjusted in this contract. Effective August 15, 1997 - $1024 per credit, effective August 14, 1998 - $1055 per credit, effective August 13, 1999 - $1097 per credit and lastly, on August 11, 2000 the rate goes to $1141 per credit.

  3. The last change for our Special Payroll Lecturers becomes effective with the 1998 academic year.  We've included it in this year's session for information and planning purposes.  The new language mandates that adjunct s that have been continuously employed for ten semesters shall be offered a multiple year contract (2 years or more) at the time of hire for the 11th semester.  This obligation is subject to adequate enrollment, satisfactory teaching evaluations and the continuation of class offerings.  The interest was to provide some increased employment stability for those individuals who have an ongoing relationship with us.
